Otis Zebidac Canupp
Otis Zebidac Canupp was born on 13 March 1890 at Cypress, a village in Johnson County in the hill country of far southern Illinois. His parents were Lawrence L. Canupp and Elizabeth Jane Davis. He was the youngest of their sons, and his father died when he was eleven.
In September 1912, at Cypress, he married Tethel Elizabeth Gore, a sixteen-year-old Cypress girl whose own father had died when she was four. Their first child, Helen Deleen, was born on 23 October 1913 near Cypress. Lillie Belle followed in 1916, Don Franklin in 1918, and a younger son, Richard Lewis. During the First World War Otis registered for the draft in Johnson County, giving his birth as 13 March 1890 at Cypress.
Tethel died at Cypress on the last day of 1926, aged thirty, and left him with four children. Four months later, on 27 April 1927, Otis took out a licence in Vigo County, Indiana, across the state line at Terre Haute, to marry Maggie Haney. On that licence he named his parents as Laurence L. Canupp and Jane Davis.
Otis Z. Canupp died at Cairo, Illinois, at the southern tip of the state where the Ohio meets the Mississippi, on 28 June 1930. He was forty. His death certificate again names his parents, Lawrence Canupp and Jane Davis, and his wife as May H. Canupp. He was buried at Cypress beside Tethel, under a single stone carved "Father and Mother."
His daughter Helen, who was sixteen when he died, later told it plainly. Her obituary in 1991 says: "Her parents died at an early age; her mother in 1926 and her father in 1930."
