Lela Cowart
Lela Cowart was born on 12 March 1895 at Watson, in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. She was one of ten daughters of Lorenzo C. Cowart and Mary Jane Palmer. In 1900 she was five and living at Livingston with her parents and her sisters Rena, Ella, Hettie and Zella. In 1910 she was fifteen, in Police Jury Ward 1 of the parish, with Rena, Mattie, Addie, Connie and the baby Bonnie, and her grandmother Mary Palmer, who had been born in Mississippi.
She married Arch Robertson of St. Helena Parish, a farmer nineteen years older than she was. Their first son, Arch Jr., was born in New Orleans on 10 January 1931. Ross Howell followed on 25 August 1932 at Greensburg, and a daughter, Delois, about 1935. By 1935 the family was farming in Police Jury Ward 3 of St. Helena Parish, outside Greensburg. Lela was 44 in the 1940 census and 55 in 1950.
Arch died at the Clinton Infirmary on 15 December 1960, and his obituary named her as "his wife, the former Lela Cowart." Lela was a widow for twenty years. She kept her home at Greensburg and belonged to the Hillsdale Baptist Church.
Lela Cowart Robertson died at the Baton Rouge Extensive Care Facility at 6:35 in the evening on Tuesday, 23 December 1980. She was 85. Her funeral was held at the McKneely Funeral Home chapel in Amite on the Friday, and she was buried in Hillsdale Cemetery beside Arch, under a stone that carries her maiden name: "Lela Cowart, Mar. 12, 1895, Dec. 23, 1980."
Her obituary named her two sons, Arch Robertson Jr. of Watson and Ross H. Robertson of Amite, and her daughter, Mrs. Frank (Delois) Bergeron of Baton Rouge. Six of her sisters were still living: Mrs. Rena Curtis, Mrs. Bonnie Thompson and Mrs. Christine Guidroz, all of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Ella Spillers and Mrs. Addie Kelly of Denham Springs, and Mrs. Connie Gore of St. Bernard. She left four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
