Ross Howell Robertson
Ross Howell Robertson, known as "Hootie" or "Hoody," was born on 25 August 1932 at Greensburg, St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. His parents were Arch Robertson, a farmer, and Lela Cowart. He had an older brother, Arch Jr., and a younger sister, Delois. His middle name was the name of his father's oldest brother.
He grew up on the family farm in Police Jury Ward 3, outside Greensburg, where the 1940 census found him at seven as Ross Howell. In April 1950 he was seventeen, still at home and working as a farm helper, and the census taker wrote him down as Howell.
With Shirley Mae Pierce of Tangipahoa Parish he had one daughter, Janice Diane, born on 24 January 1957. When his father died in December 1960, Ross was living at Walker, in Livingston Parish. He became an ironworker and belonged to Local 623 in Baton Rouge, the ironworkers' union local, until he retired. His double stone with Shirley at Hillsdale carries the date 8 November 1980 between their names. By 1980 he was living at Amite, and later he made his home at Hillsdale. Shirley died in 1994, and her obituary named him as her husband and Diane Hobbs as their daughter.
His obituary remembers him as an avid rabbit hunter. It names his daughter, Janice Diane Hobbs of Independence, whose husband Rocky Hobbs had died in 1995, and his sister, Delois Bergeron of Baton Rouge. He left two grandchildren, Jimmy Singleton of Roseland and Kim Hobbs of Independence, along with three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. His brother Archie had died before him.
Ross Robertson died at 7:30 in the morning on Monday, 13 December 2010, at St. Helena Parish Hospital in Greensburg, aged 78. Services were held on 15 December through McKneely Funeral Home of Amite, with the Rev. Don Meadows officiating, and he was buried in Hillsdale Cemetery beside Shirley. His daughter Janice died about a year later and was buried in the same cemetery.
