Luke A. Farwell
Luke A. Farwell was born in Niagara County, New York, about 1829, the son of Isaac Farwell and Mahala Daniels, and he was carried west as a child. His parents had already left New England, and the birthplaces of his younger brother and sister mark the road they took after New York: Ohio by 1836, Illinois by 1839, and then the town of Arena on the Wisconsin River, where the family was settled by 1845.
He married twice. In the summer of 1850 he was farming at Willow Springs in Lafayette County with a wife called Mary E., born in Kentucky about 1828, and a daughter Adilia born the year before. Land was assessed to him there that June. Mary was dead within a few years, and on 18 November 1857, at Primrose in Dane County, he married Caroline Thomas, a farmer's daughter of twenty-three. He brought three children to the marriage. Caroline gave him two more, Mary in 1859 and Adora on 22 March 1860.
Three months after Adora was born he was gone. The census taker who reached Primrose in June 1860 found Caroline with all five children and no husband, and Luke is on no page of that census anywhere in the country under any spelling of his name. He was about thirty-one. No death record and no grave has been found for him, so what took him is not known, only the narrow window it happened in.
