Mahala (Daniels) Farwell
Mahala Daniels was born on 30 November 1801 and died at Arena, Iowa County, Wisconsin, on 15 March 1874, in her seventy-third year. She married Isaac Farwell, born in New Hampshire on 14 May 1804, and bore him at least four children across four states. Luke A. was born in Niagara County, New York, about 1829, Isaac in Ohio in 1836 and Frances in Illinois in 1839. The last, Nellie, was born in Wisconsin in 1852. The family's road ended at Arena, where she is buried beside her husband.
In 1860 she was keeping house at Arena with her daughter Frances, by then married to a Lanton. In 1870, at sixty-eight, she was living in somebody else's household, with Nellie in the house.
Her maiden name is known only from her memorial at Arena, which carries her as Mahala Daniels Farwell. The marriage return of her son calls her Mahally Farwell, a clerk's spelling of a name he had only heard. No record of her own marriage, of her children's baptisms or of her parents is known.
Where she came from is less settled than when. Two enumerators put her birth in Vermont, in 1850 and again in 1860, and the third put it in New York in 1870. Vermont has the weight of the earlier answers and of her husband's New Hampshire birth, since New England couples generally married in New England.
