Mae Amanda Secrist
Mae Amanda Secrist was born on 25 October 1894. Her death certificate names her parents as Solomon D. Secrist and Mary Frances St. Clair. She was one of the youngest of a large family. Several of her brothers died as small children, among them Nicholas, Johnie and George, while James Daniel, Lee Roy, Huey Basil and Cephas Alfred grew up. A studio portrait in an oval mount shows her as a girl of about twelve, her hair pinned up, a wide lace bow at her throat.
She married George Henry Adams, and they raised their children in the Amsterdam district of Botetourt County near Troutville: Ruth, born 1917, Mary Frances, born 29 April 1918, and Harvey Roland, born 1922. The census of 1930 wrote her name as Mary M. Adams and that of 1940 as May.
George died at home in September 1959. Mae died in a Roanoke hospital on 21 June 1961, at 66, the widow of G. H. Adams, of Route 1, Troutville. The Fincastle Herald named her survivors as her son H. R. Adams of Roanoke, her daughters Mrs. Ruth Kelly and Mrs. Frances Burger of Troutville, her brothers C. A. Secrist of Roanoke and J. D. Secrist of Troutville, and four grandchildren. The Rev. Elbert M. Yeatts held her funeral at Rader Chapel, and she was buried beside George in the St. Clair cemetery. Her stone reads MAE S. ADAMS, OCT. 25, 1894, JUNE 21, 1961, AT REST.
