Martha Whatlock

Martha Whatlock was baptised at Rattlesden, in Suffolk, England, on 18 July 1568. She was a daughter of Thomas and Joan Whatlock. On 25 July 1594 she married Henry Scott of the same parish, a son of Edmund Scott, who had been churchwarden there.

Their son Thomas was baptised on 26 February 1594/5 and their daughter Ursula on 14 February 1596/7. There was a third child, Roger. The English year then began on 25 March, so dates in January, February and most of March are often written with both years.

Ursula married Richard Kimball of Rattlesden, and their son Henry was baptised there in 1615. Thomas became a glover. In 1620 he married Elizabeth Strutt, and their eldest child, Elizabeth, was baptised at Rattlesden in November 1623.

Her brother Robert Whatlock made his will on 20 September 1622. He left bequests to "my sister Martha Skott", to "my kinsman Thomas Skott of Rattlesden, glover", and to "my kinswoman Ursula Kemball". A year later, on 24 September 1623, Henry made his own will. He left legacies to four of Ursula's children, Abigail, Henry, Elizabeth and Richard, and to his son Thomas, and he named his wife Martha. Henry was buried at Rattlesden on 24 December 1624.

Ten years later, in April 1634, she sailed for New England with Thomas, Ursula and ten grandchildren. Thomas settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts. The Kimballs lived first at Watertown and then at Ipswich. When and where Martha died is not recorded.
