Mary Jane Parker, called Polly, was born on 6 March 1785 in Elbert County, Georgia. She was a daughter of John Parker, a Baptist elder and Revolutionary soldier, and Sarah White. Her brothers included Daniel Parker, the preacher, and Silas and Benjamin Parker, who went to Texas with their father.

In 1802 she married Jesse Kendrick. Their daughter Sarah was born in Georgia in December 1803. The family moved west with the frontier, through Maury County, Tennessee, where Carroll was born in 1815, and into north Alabama. She raised nine children: Sarah, Nancy, Rebecca, Allen, Harriet, Carroll, Jincy Matilda, Caroline and Maime.

She joined the Baptist church as a girl, the church of her father and brother. Her sons Allen and Carroll Kendrick left it for the reform movement of Alexander Campbell and became ministers of the Christian Church, and they baptized most of their brothers and sisters. Her obituary tells what she did then: she stood up in a public assembly and declared that she had come over to their faith.

The marriage broke down, and she and Jesse were divorced in Tippah County, Mississippi, in 1841. She spent her last years in Kentucky, where her sons were preaching and editing their paper. She died at Jeffersontown, near Louisville, on 18 December 1846, after a long illness, and was buried in the German Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery there.

Ten years before her death, on 19 May 1836, her father and her brothers Silas and Benjamin were killed when Comanche and allied raiders stormed Fort Parker, the family's stockade on the Navasota River in Texas. Cynthia Ann Parker, the nine-year-old daughter of Silas, was carried off in the raid.
