Mary Louisa Hutzler
Mary Louisa Hutzler, called Louisa, was born in Texas on 26 March 1881. Her death certificate names her father as Martin Hutzler and her mother as Barbara Vonflie. Both had come from Alsace as children: Martin from Oberentzen in 1852, Barbara from Gundolsheim in 1849. They farmed about three miles west of Devine, and Louisa grew up there with seven brothers and sisters: William Henry, Alvina Mary (Echtle), Catherine, called Kate, Henry Martin, George William, Joseph Albert and Edward Frederick.
She married Frederick Carl "Fritz" Haass, a Medina County farmer nineteen years older than she was. Their six children were born between 1903 and 1919: Charles Fred, Mathilda, Sebastian, Paul Frederick, Mary Louise and Helen Cecilia. Her daughter Helen boarded during the school year with Kate and Henry Vonflie, her aunt and uncle, to attend St. Louis Catholic School in Castroville.
Fritz died in 1928. Louisa later married Louis Gerloff (1884 to 1948). She died in the hospital at Castroville on 15 January 1966, at 84, after twenty-five years living in the town. Her son Paul gave the details for her certificate. She was buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville beside Fritz, under the stone that names her "Mother Louisa."
