Charles Fred Haass
Charles Fred Haass was born on 27 May 1903, the eldest child of Frederick Carl "Fritz" Haass and Louisa Hutzler, in the Alsatian farming country of Medina County, Texas. His brothers and sisters were Mathilda, who married Frank Schmitt; Sebastian; Paul Frederick; Mary, who married Aaron Bendele; and Helen Cecilia, who married Harvey Groff. In that household, by his brother Paul's account, Alsatian was the first language the children spoke.
He married Lorene Annie Haass, a daughter of Phillip E. Haass of Dunlay. She carried the same surname before her marriage because the two belonged to the same family: his grandfather and her grandfather were brothers. Their first child, Phyllis Ann, was born at Dunlay in October 1931. Their son Glenn Royce followed in July 1933 at La Coste, and a third child, Marjean, came after him. When Lorene's father died in 1948, the La Coste paper listed her among his daughters as "Mrs. Chas. Haas."
Charles died at Devine on 1 March 1989, at 85. He was buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville. Lorene was laid beside him in 2000 under a single granite stone, carved with a cross and grapes.
