Maude Belle Strong was born in Nebraska on 1 June 1879. She was a daughter of Benjamin Franklin Strong, a farmer born in Massachusetts, and Permelia Criss, born in Indiana. Seven more of her parents' children were born in Nebraska by 1893, and the family numbered at least ten.

She married George Edward Patterson, a printer, in Summit County, Ohio, in 1899. In 1900 the young couple were living at Cuyahoga Falls, where he had been born. He moved for work, and the birthplaces of their children follow him: Ohio in 1901 and 1903, Minnesota by 1905, Ohio again by 1907, then Missouri from 1908.

By 1910 the family was settled in the fifth ward of St. Joseph, Missouri, with Raymond, Sarah, Margaret and Daniel. In 1917 they lived at 424 South 20th Street. The census of 1920 found seven children at home: Raymond, Sarah, Margaret, Daniel, Deloria, Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth.

George died at home, 2612 Patee Street, on 9 August 1920, of tuberculosis. He was forty-four and she was forty-one. Their youngest child, Mary Elizabeth, was about two, and Benjamin was four.

Her parents had gone west to California. By 1930 she had followed them. That April the census found her at Rowland, in Los Angeles County, a widow of fifty living in her father's house. Frank B. Strong was eighty-two and Permelia seventy-two, and three of Maude's children, Benjamin, Deloria and Mary Elizabeth, were living there too. Her mother died in 1931 and her father on Christmas Eve 1936.

By 1935 she had her own home in Long Beach. In 1940 she was head of the household there, with Raymond, 38, Deloria, 27, Benjamin, 24, and Mary, 21, now married as Mary Phrase. In 1950 she was living in Long Beach with Raymond, a boilermaker in an automobile factory, and Deloria.

She died at her home at 1303 Michelson Street in Long Beach on 12 February 1957 and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Long Beach. Six of her children survived her, with one sister and eight brothers.
