Permelia C. Criss
Permelia C. Criss was born in Indiana in August 1857, a daughter of Levi Criss and Rebecca Need, who had married in Owen County in 1851. Both her parents were born in Ohio. In the 1870s the family moved west to Andrew County, Missouri.
She married Benjamin Franklin Strong, called Frank, a Massachusetts-born farmer ten years older than she, in Andrew County in 1875 or 1876. They went to Nebraska, and in June 1880 the census found them farming in Douglas Township, Saunders County. She was twenty-one, with three children under four: Edwin, Daisy and Maude, all born in Nebraska. Seven more were born there by 1893.
By 1896 the family was back in Missouri. In 1900 they were farming in Center Township, Dade County, with nine children at home. She told the census taker she had borne thirteen children and that eleven were living. Her last, George, was born in September 1899, when she was forty-two.
In January 1920 she and Frank were at Newport, in Barton County, Missouri, with their sons Lee and George and their widowed daughter Emma Wells. Later that year they moved to California. In April 1930 they were at Rowland, in Los Angeles County, and their widowed daughter Maude Patterson was living with them with three of her children. Permelia died in Los Angeles on 12 July 1931 and is buried at Downey, Los Angeles County.
