Michael Bacon
Michael Bacon was baptized at Winston in Suffolk, England, on 16 February 1639/40. He was the only son of Michael Bacon and his first wife Mary. The family crossed to New England in 1640, so he came over as a baby. His father was one of the first inhabitants of Woburn, and Michael grew up there with three sisters, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah.
His mother died on 26 August 1655, when he was fifteen. Two months later his father married Mary Richardson, widow of Thomas Richardson, one of the men who had founded Woburn. She brought a family of seven children. One of them was Sarah, baptized at Charlestown in November 1640, nine months younger than Michael.
On 22 March 1660 Michael married Sarah Richardson. Their first four children were recorded at Woburn: Mary in 1661, Sarah in 1663, Abigail in 1666/7 and a son Michael. By 1672 they were at Billerica, where Jonathan, Nathaniel, Josiah, Ruth, Benjamin and Joseph were born.
He worked as a shoemaker. In July 1682 he bought the farm of five hundred acres that the town of Cambridge had granted its minister, the Rev. Mr. Mitchell, on the Shawsheen River. It lay in the part of Billerica that later became the town of Bedford. A Bacon house pictured in the family genealogy of 1915 was thought to date from about then. In October 1686 he sold his mansion house and parcels of land in Woburn to Josiah Wood Jr. of Charlestown. Wood married his daughter Abigail that December.
Sarah died on 15 August 1694. In 1696 he mortgaged property to his son Michael, then "of Billerica, shoemaker." On 1 September 1697 he deeded his son Jonathan part of the Mitchell farm and a saw mill, and at the same time gave land to his son Josiah.
He died at Billerica on 13 August. The Bacon Genealogy gives the year as 1701 and Hazen's History of Billerica as 1707.
