Nathaniel Bacon was born at Billerica, Massachusetts, on 18 September 1675. He was the sixth child of Michael Bacon, a shoemaker, and Sarah Richardson. His grandfather, the elder Michael Bacon, who had crossed from England in 1640, was living in Billerica too. A month before Nathaniel was born, the town was arming itself against Indian attack, and it assigned the old man and his family to garrison house number 10.

When Nathaniel was six his father bought a farm of five hundred acres on the Shawsheen River, land that Cambridge had once granted to its minister. It lay in the part of Billerica that later became Bedford. In 1686 his father sold the family's house in Woburn, and the buyer, Josiah Wood Jr., married Nathaniel's sister Abigail that December. In 1697 his father gave his brother Jonathan part of the farm and a saw mill, and gave land to his brother Josiah.

He married Judith Wyman, the youngest child of Francis Wyman, a tanner of Woburn. Their first child was born at Billerica on 1 March 1699/1700. Ten children followed over twenty one years: Nathaniel; a Judith who lived ten weeks; a second Judith; Abigail; Sarah; a Michael who died at nine months; Susanna; a second Michael; Joseph; and Thomas.

In the summer of 1704 Lancaster was attacked, and Billerica sent twelve soldiers to its rescue. Nathaniel was one of them. In July 1706 he served two days under Major Lane in an expedition for the relief of Dunstable. His younger brother Josiah rode in the same expedition as a trooper.

His daughters married in the 1720s and 1730s. Abigail married Thomas Grover at Billerica on 26 August 1725. Eighteen months later, on 2 March 1726/7, Sarah married his brother Benjamin Grover of Stoneham. Susanna married Nathan Brooks of Concord on 9 February 1737.

Nathaniel Bacon died at Lexington on 24 July 1750, in his seventy fifth year. Where Judith was then, and when she died, is not known.
