Mildred Louise Thurber
Mildred Louise Thurber was born on 11 March 1910 at Attleboro, in Bristol County, the jewelry-making town on the Rhode Island line. She was the youngest of the five children of Edward Mason Thurber and Nora Giblin, after Sarah Gertrude, Ruth Ellen, Howard Mason and William Edward.
Her mother died in October 1918, when Mildred was eight, in the autumn the influenza went through Attleboro. In January 1920 the widower Edward Thurber had all five children at home in Bristol County: Gertrude, Ruth, Howard, William and Mildred, nine. Her father died on 31 January 1928, when she was seventeen, and both parents lie in an unmarked lot at Woodlawn Cemetery, Attleboro.
The year before, in 1927, Mildred had married Rodney Sherwood Crowell of South Yarmouth, on Cape Cod, and from then on her life was there. Their son Rodney was born about 1929 and their daughter Gayle Elizabeth on 12 February 1937. The censuses of 1940 and 1950 find her keeping house at Yarmouth and South Yarmouth with Rodney and the children.
Rodney died in April 1993. Mildred outlived him by three years and died at South Yarmouth on 22 July 1996, at eighty-six. She was buried beside him at Pine Grove Cemetery, in the rear section, lot 395-B, grave 2, and her line was cut on the shared marker: 1910 MILDRED L. 1996.
