Orin Kellogg Westfall
Orin Kellogg Westfall was born on 31 May 1904 in Idaho, the younger son of Levi Kleber Westfall, an Illinois man then nearly fifty, and his young wife Annie C. Welch, born in Iowa. His brother James Theodore had been born in Colorado in 1901. The family moved with the work. In 1910 they were at Frontier, in Uinta County, Wyoming, a coal camp in the southwest corner of the state, where Orin was entered as Oren, six. By January 1920 they had settled in Montezuma County, Colorado, and in 1930 Orin, twenty-five and single, was still in his parents' house at Lewis, the farming settlement north of Cortez where he would spend the rest of his life. He was called Tub.
His father died in 1937. By 1939 Orin had married Dessie Mae Hubbs, an Oklahoma girl seven years younger whose family had come out to Lewis from Payne County in the late 1930s. They had five daughters: Nina Mae, born about 1939, Neoma Joyce about 1941, Wanda Lee on 25 April 1943, born at home at Lewis, then Olinda and Dixie. When he registered for the draft of older men on 16 February 1942 at Lewis he gave his occupation as self-employed.
He farmed, and he kept bees. His daughter Wanda remembered helping him in his honey bee business as one of the good things of her childhood. The census of April 1950 found him at forty-five in Montezuma County with Dessie and the three eldest girls. His mother lived on at Lewis until 1959.
He died at Lewis in October 1973, aged sixty-nine, and was buried at the Sunnyside Cemetery there under a pink granite stone he shares with Dessie. A beehive is cut between their two names. Dessie outlived him by twenty-seven years.
