Helen Deleen Canupp
Helen Deleen Canupp was born on 23 October 1913 near Cypress, in Johnson County, Illinois. She was the oldest child of Otis Z. Canupp and Tethel Elizabeth Gore. She went to school at Pleasant Grove and to high school at Vienna, the Johnson County seat. Her mother died on the last day of 1926, when Helen was thirteen, and her father in 1930, when she was sixteen.
In 1933 she married Lester M. Davis of Cobden, in neighbouring Union County. He was a First World War veteran seventeen years older than she was. They had three children, Norma, Lewis and Neva, and in 1940 and 1950 the family was living at Cobden. Neva was given her mother's middle name, Deleen.
Lester died in February 1952. Helen later married Lennie Phelps, a widower with three children of his own, and he died in 1974. She worked as a cook and a waitress until she retired, and she belonged to the First Baptist Church in Cobden. She outlived two of her children: Neva Hobbs died in 1989, and her son Lewis also died before her.
Helen Deleen Davis Phelps died at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis on 28 September 1991, aged 77. Her funeral was held at the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden, with the Rev. DeWayne Taylor officiating, and she was buried in Cobden Cemetery under the stone she shares with Lester Davis.
Her obituary names her family and says of her childhood: "She was the oldest child of Otis Z. and Tethel Elizabeth (Gore) Canupp. She married Lester Davis in 1933. Born to this union were three children, Norma Leemon, Neva Hobbs and Lewis Davis. Mr. Davis died in 1952. She married Lennie Phelps. He died in 1974." It ends: "Her parents died at an early age; her mother in 1926 and her father in 1930."
