Peter Hendrick

Peter Hendrick was born on 23 July 1802, in Snake Spring Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, according to his Find a Grave memorial. A family history of 1906 agrees that he was born in Pennsylvania in 1802 and says he was carried west to Ohio as "a child in arms." His father, John Henricks, made his will in March 1816 in Madison Township, then in Muskingum County, Ohio, and named Peter among his eleven children. Peter was thirteen.

His father ran a grist mill and a saw mill. A county history of 1897 says that as a boy Peter carried the heavy grain sacks at the mill, and that the work left him stoop-shouldered for life.

At twenty-one he joined a drover taking livestock east to Philadelphia. From there he worked his way through New York and Canada to Michigan. He cleared land in Wayne County. In 1828 he married Maria, whose surname is given as Sands. Their children were Eliza Jane in 1828, Edmund in 1830 and Eli Emory in May 1832. Maria died on 19 November 1833 and was buried at Riverside Cemetery, Plymouth.

Peter married again. His second wife, Hannah, was born in New York in 1818, and their son Franklin was born in 1836. The 1850 census lists "Pehr Hendrick," born in Pennsylvania in 1802, at Plymouth, with Hannah, Edmond, Eli and Franklin.

His sons made their way in the East. Eli went into oil and screens in Pennsylvania and became mayor of Carbondale. Franklin drowned in the Allegheny River at Franklin, Pennsylvania, in 1864. Peter later farmed near Ypsilanti. Hannah died in 1883. Peter died at Ypsilanti on 28 December 1890, aged 88, and was buried at Highland Cemetery there. His headstone reads "PETER HENDRICK / 1802 - 1890," and a HENDRICK family monument carved as a rustic cross stands in the plot.
