Phillip E. Haass
Phillip E. Haass was born on 10 March 1868 in Medina County, Texas. His death certificate names his father as George Haass Sr. and his mother as Annie Taeschler, and gives the birthplace of both as "Alsace Lorraine." They were part of the Alsatian settlement that grew up around Castroville in the generation after its founding in 1844. His memorial lists eleven brothers and sisters, four of whom died young.
He married Anna Eichhorn, born the same year at Rio Medina, a few miles up the river. They farmed near Dunlay and raised eleven children: Arthur Louis in 1892, Arnold Gustave in 1893, Monroe Anton in 1895, Herbert Albert in 1897, Josephine in 1898, Paul Werner in 1899, Clarice Octavia in 1901, Ruby Marie in 1903, Lorene Annie in 1906, Ethel Aline in 1908 and Lillian Ida in 1910. Herbert died in 1945 and Josephine in 1936.
In April 1948 Phillip had a cerebral hemorrhage at home at Dunlay. He died the next day, Sunday, 11 April, at 80, of asphyxiation from paralysis of the chest muscles. His son Arthur, who lived at Dunlay, gave the details for the certificate. The funeral was held on 13 April from Tondre Funeral Home in Castroville, and he was buried in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery there, with the Rev. Durkop officiating.
