Anna Maria Taeschler
Anna Maria Taeschler was born on 15 June 1840 in Switzerland. Her death certificate names her father as Bothlamus Teschler, that is Bartholomew, and her mother as Anna Barbara Bachman, both born in Switzerland. It says she had been in the United States 86 years, so the family crossed about 1846, when she was six, in the first years of the Castro colony on the Medina River. Her memorial names an older sister, Elizabeth "Elisa" Taeschler (1835 to 1869), who also married a Haass.
She married George Louis Haass, a Dürkheim-born boy who had come to the colony in 1852. They farmed near Castroville and had twelve children between 1860 and 1882. She buried five of them: Louis at fifteen, Lina at twelve, Paulina as a baby, Walter Julius at eighteen and one more son. Her son Phillip E. Haass farmed at Dunlay.
A family photograph shows her late in life, seated beside George in a dark dress with a white ruffled collar, her grown daughters standing behind. George died in 1925. Anna lived seven more years and died of old age near Castroville on 1 August 1932, at 92. Louisa Haass gave the details for the certificate. She was buried the next day in the family cemetery, under a stone that reads "Mother. Anna Haass née Teschler. Born June 15, 1840."
