Lorene Annie Haass was born on 10 June 1906, the ninth of the eleven children of Phillip E. Haass and Anna Eichhorn, who farmed near Dunlay in Medina County, Texas. Her brothers were Arthur, Arnold, Monroe, Herbert and Paul. Her sisters were Josephine, who married a Bendele; Clarice, Mrs. Herman Garteiser; Ruby, who married Albert Richard "Dick" Newman; Ethel, Mrs. E. S. Sauls; and Lillian, who married another Haass.

She married Charles Fred Haass. She did not change her surname, because she married into her own family: his grandfather and hers were brothers. Their daughter Phyllis Ann was born at Dunlay in 1931, their son Glenn Royce at La Coste in 1933, and a second daughter, Marjean, after him. Her son's obituary gives her name as Lorene Anna Haass.

She was widowed in 1989. Lorene died on 1 December 2000, at 94, and was buried beside Charles in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville. Her daughter Phyllis was buried a few rows away in 2003.
