Phyllis Ann Haass
Phyllis Ann Haass was born on 7 October 1931 at Dunlay, in Medina County, Texas. Her parents were Charles and Lorene Haass, both from the old Alsatian families around Castroville. She was the eldest of three children. Her brother was Glenn Royce Haass, born in 1933 at La Coste, and her sister was Marjeane, who married John T. Boehme.
She graduated from Lytle High School in 1950. On 23 February 1952 she married W. R. "Bill" Newsom, who was then serving in the Air Force. They had two daughters, Denise and Dana.
The family settled in San Angelo. Her obituary says her greatest joy was being a homemaker, though she also worked ten years for Sears. She belonged to the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart and to the Tom Green County Extension Homemakers, who named her Woman of the Year in 1992. After raising her own daughters, she and Bill raised three of their grandchildren.
She died on Friday, 7 March 2003, in San Angelo, "surrounded by her loved ones." Her funeral was held at the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart on 10 March. That afternoon she was buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville, a few steps from the grave of her parents. Her survivors included her husband, her daughters Denise Tharp and Dana Keele, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, her brother Glenn and her sister Marjeane.
