Richard Lyman
Richard Lyman was baptised at High Ongar in Essex on 24 February 1617/18. He was a son of Richard Lyman and Sarah Osborne. In 1631, when he was thirteen, he crossed to New England with his parents and his brothers and sisters. The family settled at Hartford, where both his parents died about 1640.
He married Hephzibah Ford, a daughter of Thomas Ford of Windsor. Her sister Abigail was the wife of Elder John Strong. Their children were Hephzibah, Sarah, Richard, Thomas, Elizabeth, John, Joanna, born in 1658, and Hannah, born in 1660. Richard, the eldest son, was born at Windsor in 1647.
He was taxed at Hartford in 1655. That year he joined the settlers of Northampton, the new plantation up the Connecticut River, and in December 1655 he was chosen one of its first selectmen. Selectmen were the handful of men a town chose to run its business between town meetings. For a time he also lived at Windsor, where he farmed "the land of his father Ford" on the east side of the river.
He died on 3 June 1662, in his middle forties. His daughter Hephzibah married Joseph Dewey that same year. Two years later his widow married John Marsh of Hadley. In 1666 his daughter Sarah married John Marsh Jr. His daughters Elizabeth and Hannah both married Pomeroys, Elizabeth to Joshua in 1672 and Hannah to Job. His son Thomas settled at Durham.
