Richard Seamer
Richard Seamer was baptised at Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire on 27 January 1604/5: "Richard Seamer ye sonne of Robert Seymer was baptised ye xxvijth day of January." He was the eldest child of Robert Seymer and Elizabeth Waller. On 18 April 1631 he married Mercy Ruscoe there, a labourer's daughter of the same parish. Their son Thomas was baptised on 15 July 1632. A daughter Mary was baptised in January 1634/5 and buried that April, and a daughter Mercy was baptised on 8 July 1636.
His father was buried at Sawbridgeworth on 23 August 1637, and Richard left England with his family soon afterwards. He was at Hartford in Connecticut by 1639, both as a proprietor and as one of the settlers who received land "by the courtesie of the town." His home lot lay on the east side of the road to the Cow Pasture, now North Main Street, bounded on the north by the Cow Pasture itself. In 1647 he was chosen chimney viewer, one of the men who inspected the town's chimneys against fire. Three more sons were born at Hartford.
Richard Seamer, written Seymour as often as not, was among the men named in Roger Ludlow's articles of agreement for the planting of Norwalk on 19 June 1650, and in the Indian deed of 15 February 1651. He was chosen townsman on 29 March 1655.
His home lot, next to the meeting house yard, passed to his son Thomas by exchange.
He made his will on 29 July 1655. It names his wife Mercy, his eldest son Thomas, and three younger sons, all under age. The inventory was taken on 10 October and the will was proved on 25 October 1655. Mercy married John Steele of Farmington that November.
