Robert Harrison Himes was born in Brooklyn on 27 October 1892. He was the first child of Casper L. Himes, a 24-year-old from Philadelphia, and Marion L. W. Rosario, who was 22. His parents had married in Brooklyn that February. His birth was registered in the city as certificate 13235.
He grew up with a sister, Marion, born in 1900, a brother, Reginald Roosevelt, born in 1903, and a youngest sister, Laura May, born in 1905. In 1906 the family left Brooklyn for Lynbrook, in Nassau County on Long Island, where his father kept the Cozy Corner Hotel at the Five Corners. In October 1914, when Robert was 21, his father bought out George Abrams's hotel on Atlantic Avenue beside the railroad tracks, had it overhauled, and put it "under the management of Robert H. Himes." In February 1927 he was at his parents' 35th wedding anniversary party, three weeks before his father died. He registered for the draft in Nassau County in the First World War, giving his birth as 27 October 1892 at Brooklyn.
He married Charlotte, who was born in New York about 1896. In 1940 the census found them renting a house at 11 Second Street in Lynbrook for $45 a month. Robert was 47 and Charlotte 44, and they had lived there since at least 1935. Their children at home were Marian, 19, Robert, 18, Vivian, 17, Charlotte, 13, and Ralph, 11.
By 1947 the family lived on Taft Avenue in Lynbrook. That June their son Robert married Grace Pauly at the Lynbrook Baptist Church, with his brother Ralph as best man.
Ten years later, on 2 April 1950, Robert and Charlotte L. Himes were still in Lynbrook. Their married daughter Vivian L. Holmes was living with them. Their son Robert was married by then and had his own household in the village, with his wife Grace and a baby son.
His brother Reginald died at Freeport in July 1956, and his death notice named Robert among his surviving brothers and sisters. Robert Harrison Himes died at Freeport on 4 April 1979, aged 86. He was buried in Rockville Cemetery at Lynbrook.
