Robert Himes
Robert Harding Himes was born at Lynbrook, on the south shore of Long Island, on 29 December 1921. His parents were Robert Harrison Himes, a Brooklyn-born man, and Charlotte Himes. He grew up in Lynbrook with his sisters Charlotte, Marian and Vivian and his brother Ralph. His grandfather Casper Himes kept a restaurant at the village's Five Corners.
In 1940 Robert was 18 and single, living at home in the same Lynbrook house where the family had been since at least 1935.
He enlisted in the Army at New York City on 12 November 1942. He served three years in the Army Air Forces in the Second World War, twenty-two months of them overseas in England, and came out a staff sergeant. Back home he joined Lynbrook's Veterans of Foreign Wars post, Post 2307, and kept his membership for the rest of his life.
On Sunday 15 June 1947 he married Grace Pauly, a Lynbrook girl seven years younger than he was, at the Lynbrook Baptist Church. His brother Ralph was his best man, and the reception was held at the Lynbrook Elks clubhouse. On 3 April 1950 the census found them in their own household in Lynbrook. Robert was 28 and worked as a clerk in a hardware store. Grace was 21, and their son Robert was a year old. Four more children followed: Richard, born at Oceanside in 1953, William, Linda and Carol.
Robert worked for many years as a furniture finisher for Smithtown Colonial, and retired from it. The family later lived at Massapequa Park. About 1991 Robert and Grace moved to Spring Hill, in Hernando County, Florida, where they belonged to the First United Methodist Church in Hudson.
Robert Harding Himes died at the HPH Hospice Care Center in Brooksville on Monday 30 November 2009, at 87. He left his wife Grace, three sons, two daughters, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was buried in Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell, and Grace was laid with him in 2018.
