Rosa Belle Stanley, called Rosy, was born in Dickenson County, Virginia, on 20 November 1896, the eldest child of James Anderson Stanley and Amey Mullins. Her parents had married in January 1897 and were both under twenty. In June 1900 the family lived in Clintwood town, the county seat: James A. Stanley, 22, his wife Amey, 21, Rosabell, 2, and Mary Jane, 1. More brothers and sisters followed: Lou Emma, Callie, Bethana, Clonas and Hatcher among them.
On 2 April 1919, at twenty-two, she married George Johnson at Isom, a few miles from Clintwood. George was twenty-nine, a son of Cas and Causby Johnson, and a widower. His first wife, Belva Mullins, had died in the influenza epidemic the October before, and Rosy took on his four children, Elsie, Earl, Ezra and Edna, the youngest barely a year old. In January 1920 the census found the household at Clintwood, with Rosy aged twenty-one and expecting.
Her daughter Ruby Helen was born at Clintwood on 11 March 1920. The family then crossed into Kentucky, to the coal town of Jenkins in Letcher County, where Nona Marie was born on 21 September 1921 and Virnel Miles on 25 March 1923.
By the autumn of 1924 they were back in Clintwood district. Rosy fell ill with blood poisoning and died on 26 October 1924, three days after it took hold. She was twenty-seven and a housewife. Her death certificate gives her father as J. A. Stanley and was filed by the registrar A. H. Kendrick. She was buried on 28 October; the certificate names the Mullins Cemetery, and her stone stands among the Stanley graves at Ramey Flats near Clintwood, where her parents were later buried. She left three children of her own, aged four, three and one, and four stepchildren.
Her children grew up in their father's house at Whitesburg and Jenkins. Ruby Helen gave her own second daughter her mother's name, Rosa, in 1943.
