Sable Mary Sherman
Sable Mary Sherman was born on 16 February 1913 at Marksville, the seat of Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, the eldest daughter of George A. Sherman and Cecile Bordelon, who had married there in January 1908. The household in 1930 was George, 46, Cecile, 42, Sable, 17, written Syble by the census taker, Narcille, 14, Gladys, 10, Georgette, 8, and Una Lee, 4. There was also a sister Rena, who married a Bordelon.
About 1934 or 1935 she married Robert Woodrow Gray, a Beaumont-born New Orleans boy three years younger than her who went by Woodrow. Their son Woodrow Paul Gray was born on 5 December 1935, and his Social Security application places the birth at Marksville, so she seems to have gone home to her mother to have him. By 1940 the couple were in New Orleans, boarding at 1608 Moss Street with her sister Narcille and Narcille's husband William Booksh and their two small daughters. Her sister Georgette, 19, was there too. Sable, 26, had finished the seventh grade and was keeping house. In 1950 she was 37 and still in New Orleans with Robert, a bus operator, and their son.
Her sisters stayed close. Narcille Booksh and Gladys Sherman died before 2003; Georgette married Frederick Anthony Aiple and died at Metairie in January 2003, aged 81, her obituary naming Sable among the sisters who had gone before her; Una married an Olivier and was still living in 2003.
Robert died in August 1998. Sable died on 7 September 1999, aged 86, living at Kenner, and was buried on 10 September beside him in the Resurrection Mausoleum at Saint Louis Cemetery No. 3, New Orleans. The plaque reads "SABLE S. GRAY FEB. 16, 1913 SEPT. 7, 1999."
