Cecile Bordelon
Cecile Bordelon was born in March 1888 at Marksville, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, into the parish's most numerous family, the Bordelons, descended from the French settlers of the Avoyelles Post. She married George A. Sherman in Avoyelles Parish on 22 January 1908, a month before her twentieth birthday.
She raised six daughters at Marksville: Sable Mary, born in February 1913, who married Robert Woodrow Gray and went to New Orleans; Narcille, who married William Booksh; Gladys; Georgette, born 1921, who married Frederick Anthony Aiple and settled in Metairie; Una Lee, who married an Olivier; and Rena, who married a Bordelon. When her grandson Woodrow Paul Gray was born in December 1935 his birth was recorded at Marksville, so Sable had come home to her for it.
George died in March 1966. Cecile lived another twenty years at Marksville and died there on 9 May 1986, aged 98. She was buried with George in plot 218 of Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery, under the stone that reads "SHERMAN. GEORGE A. 1884-1966. CECILE B. 1888-1986. May they rest in peace." The 2003 obituary of her daughter Georgette named her "the late Cecile Bordelon".
She was the daughter of Emile E. Bordelon and Irma Moreau, who had married in 1883. In June 1900 she was 12 and living with them in Marksville town, the third of eight children then at home: Gervais, Albert, Cecile, Robert, Rosa, Annette, Samuel and Emma. Two more brothers, George Emile and Paul Emile, were born after 1900. Her father died in 1940 and her mother in 1952, and both lie in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery, the same churchyard where she and George were buried.
