Samuel Grady Puckett
Born at Conyers, Georgia, on 26 September 1893. He gave that date and that town himself when he registered for the draft in Henry County during the First World War, and the same date is cut on his headstone.
He married Sallie Inez Thurman, a Henry County girl born in July 1895, and they stayed in that county for the better part of thirty years. In 1920 they are in militia district 888 of Henry County with one child, Maggie Lou. By 1930 they are in district 622 of the same county with five: Maggie L., Mary B. A., Zelma, Zack and Charles D. The Zelma of that page is the Thelma who would marry Harold Lee McCollum, and the enumerator's ear for her name was no better than the next man's.
Some time in the second half of the 1930s the family crossed the county line into Clayton County, to Rex. The 1940 census puts them in district 1406 in Clayton and records that five years earlier they had been in Henry, and their son gave Rex as both his birthplace and his address when his own war came. In 1950 he is still there, entered as about fifty five, with Sallie and the two youngest boys at home.
He died on 19 November 1958 in Clayton County and was buried back at Stockbridge, in Henry County, where his wife's father already lay and where she would join him twenty six years later.
