Sarah Narcissa Cremeans was born on 15 December 1833 in what was then Mason County, Virginia, the eldest of the seven known children of Henderson Cremeans and Elizabeth Angel. She married Levi Fetty at Mason County on 1 July 1863, and the clerk rendered her name as Narcipa Cormeons, which is how a spoken name reaches paper in a county courthouse.
The 1850 census puts a fourteen year old Nathaniel Cremeans in the household of Vinson Fetty, Levi's father. The two families were not strangers who met. They were already under one roof.
She named her children after her own family. Her brothers were Henry and William Hamilton, called Ham, and her sister was Eliza. Her sons include Henry Lee and Hamilton, and her daughter is Eliza C. Three of ten, and none of them a name Levi's side was using.
Levi died on 1 February 1885 and she was a widow for forty two years. She was fifty one. She never remarried. The 1910 census finds her at seventy seven in the Harman District of Mason County, in her son Jasper's house with her son Samuel under the same roof, entered as N. R. Fetty, mother, widowed. Later she crossed the Ohio to the Lawrence County side, where Jasper's family had gone, and died at Rome on 9 April 1927. She was buried at Coil Cemetery two days later.
Her age is settled by three records against two. The 1863 marriage return has her at twenty four and the 1880 census at forty one, and both of those mean 1839. Her death certificate gives 15 December 1833; a Mason County history compiled from local sources gives the same day and year without having seen it; and the 1910 census, taken while she was sitting in the room, makes her seventy seven. Three to two, and the three include the only two that name a day.
