Thomas Harvey was born at Taunton, in the Plymouth Colony, about 1643. His father, also Thomas, had been at Cohannet, the settlement that became Taunton, since at least 1638. He died in 1651, when the boy was about eight. His mother, Elizabeth, married twice more, first Francis Street and then Thomas Lincoln, the Taunton miller. A family history of 1899 says she lived to be a hundred and three.

In 1668 he married his first cousin Experience Harvey, a daughter of his father's brother William. In 1669 he kept one of Taunton's first ordinaries. An ordinary was a licensed house that served meals and drink to travellers.

In 1673 he served as a sergeant in the expedition against the Dutch.

His children were Thomas, born in 1669, John in 1671, Nathaniel in 1673, Ebenezer in 1675, Experience and Mary.

In March 1714, "being then about 71", he conveyed his homestead to his son Ebenezer. The deed carried a condition: Ebenezer was to "take care of him the said Thomas and his wife". He died in 1726.
