Shirley Quackenbush
Shirley Louise Quackenbush was born at Augusta, Georgia, on 25 January 1950. She was the daughter of Stanley Shirley Quackenbush, a Vermont-born man, and Eunice L. Smith of Bath, South Carolina, who had married the April before. Augusta was the city for the mill villages of the Horse Creek Valley across the Savannah River, where her mother worked the looms at Bath Mill for forty-six years.
She grew up in Aiken County among six younger brothers and sisters: Janet, Rhetta, Bo, Randy, Mark and Stanley Jr. In January 1965, when she was fourteen and living at Warrenville, she applied for a Social Security number, often the first step toward a first job.
She married Jimmy Sanford, and their children were Mike'l, Jimmy and Dana. She was Shirley L. Sanford in those years. Later she married Douglas L. Frye, who was born on 12 May 1946.
Shirley Q. Frye died on 8 September 2002, aged 52, and was buried in Langley Cemetery, where her parents also lie. Her headstone reads "Frye" across a carved scroll, with Douglas L. on one side and Shirley Q. on the other, and beneath them: "Together forever with Jesus." Douglas was laid beside her in November 2017. Her mother outlived her by fifteen years.
