Susannah Ward
Susannah Ward was born about 1795, one of the Ward family of Beech Hill in Kings County, Nova Scotia, daughters of the Yorkshire settlers William and Elizabeth Ward. Three Ward sisters married three Dodge brothers. Sarah married John Archibald Dodge in 1810, Susannah married Jacob Britain Dodge at Horton on 1 September 1813, and Rebeccah married Stephen Dodge in 1816.
Susannah and Jacob had two daughters: Sarah Alice, born on 29 May 1814, and Frances Susan, born on 19 May 1816. Susannah died on 14 March 1819, in the twenty-fourth year of her age, and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Kings County. Her headstone is carved at the top with a winged face and reads "In Memory of SUSANNAH the wife of JACOB DODGE who died March 14th 1819 in the 24th Year of her Age". A verse below is worn; it begins "Death is a debt".
Some accounts make her the mother of Jacob's son George Gardiner Dodge, born on 27 September 1822, because the Horton township book is said to name her on his birth. Her stone puts her death three and a half years before he was born. Gardner and his elder sister Eunice, born in December 1820, were children of Jacob's second wife, Olive Schofield. Olive was Susannah's niece, the daughter of her elder sister Hannah, and she brought up Susannah's two little girls, who were her own first cousins.
