William Ward was a Yorkshire farmer. Between 28 February and 7 March 1774 he sailed from Hull for Nova Scotia in the ship Two Friends, with his wife Elizabeth and their son Moses. The customs list of the sailing enters him as "William Ward 24 Farmer", from Yorkshire, which puts his birth about 1749 or 1750. Elizabeth was twenty-two and Moses eighteen months old.

The list has a column for each passenger's reason for leaving. William's line carries ditto marks down from the line of John Willison above him: "going to seek a better livelihood". A note about a raised rent on the same page belongs to another passenger, Anthony Hill.

Family memorials call him William Allen Ward, born in 1750, and say the family came from near Guisborough in the North Riding, where Moses was born in August 1772. No baptism or marriage that confirms it is known.

They lived first at Windsor and then took up land at Beech Hill in Kings County, where there was as yet no road south of Kentville. The clearing he cut there was the furthest south in the county. Eaton's History of Kings County records his sons Moses, David, William, John, Joseph and Aaron, the last born on 25 January 1798. His daughters are placed in the family by memorials: Hannah, born on 2 November 1774, who married Nathan Schofield; and Sarah, Susannah and Rebeccah, who married three Dodge brothers between 1810 and 1816.

Elizabeth died at Beech Hill in November 1841. William died on 26 November 1844, in his mid-nineties.
