Thomas Hassen of Cadney
Thomas Hassen, christened at Cadney in Lincolnshire on 11 March 1580/1, a son of John Hasson of that parish and his wife Elizabeth. He was a labourer, and he called himself one in his own will.
He married a woman named Elizabeth and their first three children were christened at Cadney: John in November 1612, Edward on 24 December 1614 and Robert at the end of November 1617. Somewhere between 1615 and 1617 the family moved about seven miles south to Grasby, and the last two children, Richard in December 1619 and William in July 1622, were christened there. In 1619 Thomas Wright and Thomas Hassen were churchwardens of Grasby, so within two or three years of arriving he was holding the parish office.
He made his will on 15 May 1628, describing himself as Thomas Hassen of Gresby in the County of Lincoln laborer sick in bodie but of good & pfect memorie (God be thanked for it), and he was buried in the Grasby churchyard six days later, on 21 May. The will left thirty shillings each to John and Edward and forty shillings each to Robert, Richard and William, all payable at twenty one, with a survivorship clause dividing the portion of any child who died first among the rest. Everything else went to his wife, whom he made sole executrix. It was proved at Market Rasen on 28 July 1628.
Edward, thirteen when his father died, was in Massachusetts by about 1646.
