Thomas Richardson

d. 1633
Died 1633
Children include Elizabeth, Thomas

Thomas Richardson was "of Standon" in Hertfordshire when he married Katherine Duxford of Westmill on 24 August 1590. They married in Westmill church and stayed in Westmill. He was a husbandman, a small farmer ranking below a yeoman.

Their children were baptized at Westmill: Elizabeth on 13 January 1593/4, John on 7 November 1596, James on 6 April 1600, Samuel on 22 December 1602, Margaret on 19 April 1607 and Thomas on 3 July 1608. The year of Samuel's baptism is printed as 1602, with "or 1604" beside it. Another son, Ezekiel, was born by about 1604, but his baptism is not in the Westmill register. Elizabeth married Francis Wyman at Westmill in 1617 and was buried there in June 1630.

Ezekiel was the first to leave. He was a planter at Charlestown in Massachusetts in 1630, probably having come with Winthrop's fleet, and he and his wife joined the Charlestown church on 27 August 1630. Samuel and Thomas followed. The three are known as brothers from Ezekiel's own will, which names the other two. With Francis and John Wyman, sons of their dead sister Elizabeth, they were among the founders of Woburn.

He made his will on 4 March 1630, which is 1630/1 by modern reckoning, when he was ill. "I Thomas Richardson of Westmill in the County of Herts, husbandman, being sick in bodye but of good an perfect memory thanks be to God doe make and ordeyne this my laste will." To his wife Katherine he left for her life "my littell close of pasture called little hunnymeade cont half an acre," then to his son Samuel. His son John was to have forty shillings within three years of the deaths of Thomas and Katherine. James was left twelve pence. Thomas was to have three pounds within five years. Katherine was to have all his movable goods for her life, and then Samuel, whom he made sole executor. He signed with his mark. Richard Baker and Philip Baker witnessed.

Katherine died first. She was buried on 10 March 1631/2. Thomas Richardson was buried at Westmill on 8 January 1633/4. His will was proved at Hitchin on 31 July 1634 on the presentation of his son Samuel. The Archdeaconry of Huntingdon, whose Hitchin registry covered seventy seven Hertfordshire parishes, had the probate of Westmill.
