Thomas Richardson
Thomas Richardson was baptized at Westmill in Hertfordshire on 3 July 1608. He was the youngest child of Thomas Richardson, a husbandman, and Katherine Duxford. His mother was buried in March 1632 and his father in January 1634. His father's will left him three pounds, to be paid within five years.
His brother Ezekiel had gone to Charlestown in Massachusetts in 1630. Thomas and his brother Samuel followed. His wife Mary joined the Charlestown church on 21 February 1635/6. Thomas and Samuel joined on 18 February 1637/8, and both were made freemen on 2 May 1638. A freeman of the Massachusetts Bay colony could vote, and church membership was required for it.
Their first two children were baptized at Charlestown: Mary in November 1638 and Sarah on 22 November 1640. On 5 November 1640 Thomas was one of seven commissioners chosen to begin the settlement of a new town north of Charlestown. It became Woburn, incorporated in 1642. His brothers Ezekiel and Samuel were among its founders too, and so were his sister Elizabeth's sons, Francis and John Wyman.
At Woburn five more children were born: Isaac in May 1643, Thomas in October 1645, Ruth in April 1647, Phebe in January 1648/9 and Nathaniel in January 1650/1.
He died at Woburn on 28 August 1651, aged forty three, and left no will. His inventory was taken on 22 September 1651. It listed four oxen, five cows, a mare, eight swine, "four flitches of Bacon," ten pieces of pewter and "his servant's time, that he hath yet to serve." It closed: "He hath left a wife, three sons, and four daughters."
Four years later his widow Mary married Michael Bacon of Woburn. In 1660 their daughter Sarah married Bacon's only son.
