William Reed
William Reed was born at Weymouth, Massachusetts, on 16 October 1639, a son of William Reade of Weymouth and his wife Ivis. His father had come over in 1635 and sat for Weymouth in the General Court.
In 1675 he married Esther Thompson of Middleborough. She was a daughter of Lieutenant John Thompson and his wife Mary, who was a daughter of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower.
He was constable of Weymouth in 1675. A constable then was the town's chief officer, who collected taxes, served warrants and kept the peace. He was a selectman in 1680, an extensive dealer in land, and a representative to the General Court.
The Weymouth births enter his children as children of William and Esther: John on 21 October 1680, a second John on 10 July 1687, Jacob on 6 November 1691 and Sarah on 21 March 1694. The family history adds William; Bathsheba, written there as "Bushnor, who married a Mr. Porter"; Mercy, who married a Whitmarsh; Mary; and Hester. Bathsheba married Nicholas Porter of Weymouth and Abington.
His will was proved on 12 September 1706.
