Delphine Elmore
Delphine Elmore was born in 1856 in Adair County, Missouri, the third child of John Smith Elmore and Nancy Emiline Tweedle, who had come out from Schuyler County, Illinois the autumn before and taken a farm near Gibbs. Her two older sisters, Sarah Ann and Josephine, died as small children, so she grew up the eldest of the eight who lived: Thomas, Victoria, Ollie, Sabina, Sylvianna, Emry and John followed her.
On 22 February 1874, at about eighteen, she married Coleman Uriah Coombes, a Kentucky-born farmer's son from Macon County, in Adair County. They went to Smith County, Kansas, came back to Gibbs, where her son Everett was born in 1889, and by 1900 were farming in Liberty Township, Cowley County, Kansas. She bore eleven children and buried three of them young. Her father died at Gibbs in 1888. When her mother died there in May 1911 the La Plata Home Press listed the survivors, and she headed them as Delphina Combs of Dexter, Kansas, the town nearest the Coombes farm in Liberty Township.
Cole died at Winfield in 1936 and Delphine followed in 1939, aged about 83. They lie under one red granite stone at Akron Cemetery in Fairview Township.
