John Smith Elmore
John Smith Elmore was born in 1831 in White County, Tennessee, a son of Thomas Elmore and Anna Saylors. His parents had married in Tennessee, and in the fall of 1830 they moved to Schuyler County in western Illinois, where he grew up on the farm. He married Nancy Emiline Tweedle, a Kentucky-born girl of his own age, in Schuyler County in 1850; her obituary gives the day as 17 February and his family's record 17 June.
In the autumn of 1855 they moved to Adair County, Missouri, and took a farm at Gibbs, in Wilson Township, where he lived the rest of his life. Eleven children were born to them, seven girls and four boys. Three died in infancy, Sarah Ann and Josephine among them, and the eldest surviving daughter Delphine married Coleman Coombes in 1874. His son Thomas Oregon died in 1886.
He died at nine on the evening of Thursday 13 December 1888, aged about 57. The Kirksville Weekly Graphic wrote that he "was a successful farmer" and well to do in this world's goods, "a life long Democrat, and an honest man and good neighbor," and that he left a wife, five children and two brothers, William C. and Andrew J. Elmore; "Uncle John Elmore an old and honored citizen died at his home last week, after a short illness." He was buried in the family burying ground on the farm, now the Elmore Family Cemetery.
