Selden Huntley
Selden Huntley was born at Marlow, New Hampshire, on 20 October 1797, according to a Huntley family genealogy printed in 1978. His gravestone agrees, giving his age at death as sixty-four years and six months. A Church family genealogy of 1914 gives the year as 1798. He was the youngest of the seven children of Isaiah Huntley and Elizabeth Church.
The family moved north into Vermont, where his parents are buried at Duxbury Corner. Selden married Dorothy Spiller of Chelsea, in Orange County. Their son John Hamden was born at Chelsea in December 1828, and the family later lived at Brookfield in the same county.
Eight children are known. Marinda was born in March 1823 and married John Conant of Lowell. Sarah followed in August 1824 and married John Biglow of Barre. Then came John Hamden in 1828, George on 4 February 1831, and Alma on 19 December 1832. Erastus was born in 1835, Newcomb in 1837, and Harriet L. on 10 March 1842.
Alma died on Christmas Day 1853, six days after her twenty-first birthday. George had gone to western Pennsylvania by then, and he named his first daughter for her two months later. Harriet married a Harrington and died at Barre in 1908.
Selden died at Brookfield on 8 May 1862 and was buried in the East Brookfield cemetery. Dorothy lived eighteen years longer and lies there with him.
