John Franklin
John Franklin was born in South Carolina, his memorial says in 1763. He was a son of Thomas Franklin of Chester County and his wife Priscilla. When his father made his will, he left John "one tract of land known by the name of Cotswills Tract and one shilling sterling." The home place went to John's brother, Thomas Baker Franklin, who was named executor with their mother. Their sisters Frances, Mary and Elizabeth received a shilling each. The estate was inventoried on 14 August 1789.
John lived out his life in Chester County. His children included a son, Newton, born about 1788, and a daughter, Priscilla. About 1810 Priscilla married James Huey Jr., whose family was about to leave for Louisiana.
On 13 December 1811 John Franklin made a deed of gift for her. "For the Regard which I have for my Daughter Priscilla," the wife of James Huey Junior, he gave Newton an enslaved girl named Leaf, about ten or eleven, in trust for Priscilla and her children. Henry Hurst, John Bryan and Francis Wilks witnessed it, and Henry Hurst swore to it on 30 December. Three weeks later the Hueys set out for Ouachita Parish.
He died in Chester County in 1817 and was buried in the Franklin family cemetery there. Newton died the next year, on 7 December 1818, and was buried in the same ground.
