Jonathan Coogle
Jonathan Coogle, son of Benjamin and Dorcas Coogle, married Eleanor Holt in Monongalia County on 3 April 1823, and was still being named as a father on his daughter Elizabeth's marriage return in 1858.
When he died is not known. The state's death index gives a Jonathan Coogle dying in Marion County on 2 July 1879, aged seventy eight, but it joins two lines of the register. Line 22 reads Jonathan Coogle, died 6 August 1879, of heart disease, aged fifty four years seven months and one day. The date 2 July and the age seventy eight are on line 23, against Emeal Cunningham, who died by suicide.
The man on line 22 cannot be him. A man born in January 1825 does not marry in April 1823, and does not have an eighteen year old daughter keeping house for her grandfather in 1850. So there was a second Jonathan Coogle in Marion County, a generation younger, and his line names his parents as Benj. and Dorcas Coogle as well.
His descent from Benjamin and Dorcas rests on Benjamin's own codicil of 1851, which calls Jonathan's daughter Dorothy his granddaughter, and that is a document Benjamin signed himself.
