Mary Humfrey
Mary Humfrey was baptised at Thaxted in Essex on 13 February 1602/3. Her father, Robert Humfrey, was a gentleman of the town who later served twice as mayor of the borough. Her mother, Ann Holland, had married him at Wimbish in 1600. Ann was buried at Thaxted on 2 June 1603, when Mary was four months old. Mary's only full sibling was her sister Ann, baptised in 1601.
She grew up with two stepmothers. Her father married Rebecca by 1606, and Rebecca bore John, Robert and a second Rebecca before she died in 1613. In 1618 he married Dorcas Bowtell. Of the younger children only John is known to have grown up.
On 5 October 1624, at twenty one, she married Andrew Warner of the neighbouring parish of Hatfield Broad Oak. The Thaxted register calls him "Andrew Warner of Hatfield Magna" and her "Mary Humfrey daughter of Robert of Thaxted." Boyd's index of Essex marriages enters her under the Latin form of her name, as Maria. Her sister Ann had married Thomas Clayton at Thaxted the year before.
By the time her mother-in-law, Mary Warner, made her will in May 1627, there were "Two children of Andrew my sonne." These were probably John, born about 1625, and Mary, born about 1626. Andrew, born about 1628, and Robert, born about 1630, followed.
Her husband came to Cambridge in Massachusetts in 1633. In 1636 the family moved to Hartford, on the Connecticut River, and her husband became a deacon of the Hartford church. Her son Isaac was born about 1644.
Her father made his will a few years after she left England. He was buried at Thaxted on 1 January 1638/9. She died in New England by 1657, when her husband had married again.
