Richard Treat
Richard Treat was baptised in Pitminster church, in Somerset, on 28 August 1584, a son of Robert Trott. The family lived at South Trendle, a hamlet of Pitminster that later became the parish of Trull. His father held a messuage, a house with its yard and outbuildings, and half a virgate of bondland there from the manor of Taunton. A virgate was a standard holding of farmland, and bondland was land held by the customs of the manor rather than outright.
His father died when Richard was about fifteen. On 4 March in the forty second year of Queen Elizabeth, 1599/1600, the manor court admitted him to the family holding: "Richard Trotte for one Messuage and half a Virgate of Bondland, one Cottage with its Appurtenances, and four acres of Overland in the Tything of South Trendle, late held by Hugh Holwell, by surrender of Robert Trotte, to be held by him under condition that Honora (Honour) relict of said Robert (Trotte) have hold and possess all and every of the Premises during her widowhood." His bondsmen were John Prist and Nicholas Dolling. It was the same land his grandfather Richard had passed to his father in 1571.
On 27 April 1615 he married Alice Gaylard in Pitminster church. She was the daughter of Hugh Gaylard, who held land in the same tithing of South Trendle and had been buried the October before. Their children were baptised at Pitminster: Honor on 19 March 1615/16, then Joanna, Sarah, Richard and Robert, and Susanna on 8 October 1629.
The family crossed to New England and settled at Wethersfield, on the Connecticut River. By 1642 he was styled "Mr.," a title given to men of standing. He served on a jury on 15 June 1643 and on the grand jury that September. In 1669 he was made a freeman of the colony as "Richard Tret, sen."
Honor married John Deming. Joanna married Lt. John Hollister. Susanna married Robert Webster, a son of Gov. John Webster. His son Robert became governor of Connecticut.
He was alive on 11 October 1669. The inventory of his estate was presented to the court on 3 March 1669/70. His wife Alice outlived him. The Treat family genealogy of 1893 rejects as "unfounded" a tradition that his children were the children of an earlier wife named Joanna.
