Robert Trowbridge was born on 7 August 1899 and grew up in Randolph Township, Morris County, New Jersey, the hill country around Dover. His father, William Francis Trowbridge, was a Morris County man born in 1856. His mother, Anna Mae Southard, was born at Lake Hopatcong in 1864. In June 1900 the household in Randolph Township held William, 44, Anna, 35, who had been married seventeen years, and their children Harry, 11, Elwood, 10, Myrtle, 2, and Robert, the baby, born the previous August.

The family grew to at least nine children: Willie, Ellwood, Harry, Mahlon, Myrtle, Robert, Eddie, Winifred and Walter. A photograph of the class at the Millbrook schoolhouse, taken about 1915, shows Robert under the window shutter with his brothers Eddie and Walter and his sister Winnie in the same room. Millbrook is a section of Randolph Township.

In 1933 Robert married Clara Delinda Flornes, the daughter of a Norwegian, Sigurd Mander Flornes, and Lydia Jane Stoll. He was 33 and she was 19 or 20. Their marriage was recorded in Bergen County. They had four children: Doris Carolyn, born about 1935; Robert William, born at Dover on 15 March 1936; Barbara Marie, born at Dover on 5 May 1940; and Walter Leroy, born at Dover on 2 April 1944. A photograph of Robert and Clara standing beside a car with a 1941 New Jersey plate shows him in a broad-brimmed hat with his arm around her.

In May 1950 the census taker found the family in Randolph Township. Robert, 51, was driving a truck for an ice delivery business and had worked 42 hours the week before. Clara was 36. Doris was 16, Robert Jr. 14, Barbara 10 and Walter 6. Robert's mother, Anna May, 86 and widowed, lived with them.

A photograph from the mid 1960s shows Robert at Millbrook, crouched in a field of low plants in a white undershirt. He died on 21 April 1967, aged 67. He is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Randolph under a flat granite stone that reads "Robert Trowbridge, Aug. 7, 1899, Apr. 21, 1967, Beloved Father." Clara lies beside him, and their son Robert William and daughter Barbara are buried in the same cemetery.
