Sarah Elizabeth Wright
Sarah Elizabeth Wright was born on 2 October 1838 in Morgan County, Georgia, east of Atlanta. Her memorial names her parents as Thomas Roderick Wright and Rebecca Ann Langston, who brought the family to north Louisiana. Her father died at Vienna, in what is now Lincoln Parish, in 1854.
Her first husband was Charles Mason Huey. Their children were Charles Mason Huey, later of Pioneer, and a daughter called Dinka, or Dinkie, who married a Chambless. As a widow she married Benjamin Franklin Hinton, nine years younger than she was, whose father had given the land for Wesley Chapel church. With him she had James Huey Hinton, Winnie, Ola, Leslie, Julia and Sallie. Julia, born in 1880, married Wesley Broadwell Lyles.
Benjamin died in 1922. Sarah lived on for twelve years more and became known across the parish as "Grandmother" Hinton. She spent her last days at Pioneer, in West Carroll Parish, at the home of her daughter Winnie and Winnie's husband, Hope Fallin. She was in good health until a few days before the end. She died there at five o'clock on the afternoon of Tuesday, 1 May 1934, aged 95.
The undertakers, McLure and Company, drove out early the next morning for her body. She was buried that afternoon at three o'clock "in the old burying ground at Wesley Chapel, several miles southwest of Ruston." The Ruston paper put her death on its front page. It listed her surviving daughters as Mrs. Dinkie Chambliss of Oak Grove, Mrs. Fallin of Pioneer, Mrs. Jim Kinman and Mrs. Weslie Lyles of the Wesley Chapel community. Her sons were Charley Huey of Pioneer and Jim Hinton of near Ruston. She also left "a large concourse of grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren."
